Suspect apprehended and our drone helped!

Did you know K9 Partners bought a drone for the K9 Unit to help them located and catch elusive suspects safely? We did. K9 Partners was mentioned in this release from the Washoe Country Sheriff’s Department. Your donation money at work.

Within 24 hours of alerting the public to be vigilant, our community members and law enforcement officers worked together. Now, the person of interest sought in connection to a shooting, and the suspect in an attempted catalytic converter theft is in custody.

PRESS RELEASE: Washoe County Sheriff’s Office K9, Patrol deputies arrest person of interest sought in Cold Springs shooting, attempted catalytic converter theft

Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Patrol deputies and members of the K9 Unit arrested Dustin Dewey shortly before 8:30 a.m. on August 28, 2021, thanks to alert residents in the Red Rock area.

Multiple community members called Washoe County dispatch at 7:00 a.m. to report a suspicious person fitting Dewey’s description in the area.

Nearly a dozen Washoe County Sheriff’s Office personnel were sent to the neighborhood.

Dustin Dewey was located utilizing a drone assigned to the K9 Unit and donated by Washoe County K9 Partners. The Sheriff’s Office employs state of the art technology whenever possible to ensure the safety of law enforcement personnel and members of our community. The drone located Dewey in the open space between Red Rock Road and the Red Rock Pits, about 100 yards away from residences on Pathfinder Drive.

Dewey was in possession of a gun. He was taken into custody without incident.

At this time Dewey is charged with one felony count of eluding; one felony count of attempted vehicle burglary; one felony count of carrying a concealed weapon without a permit; and one misdemeanor count of leaving the scene of an accident. This is an active investigation, and more charges are pending.

K9 Boomer mug is at consign Furniture

Boomer was the odd ball on the K9 team. He’s a handsome hound dog, a Vizsla breed originating from Hungary. He is now retired, but did a great job while he was on the WCSO team. Team Honors Sgt. Van Der Wall & K9 Boomer

Photo of Teams presenting plaques to Sgt. Van Der Wall

From the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office:
A K9 Unit tradition: Today the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office K9 Team, along with members of the Northern Nevada Interdiction Task Force including Reno Police officers, surprised WCSO Sergeant Sam Van Der Wall.

Sgt. Van Der Wall recently promoted, and his K9 partner, Boomer, retired. They leave pretty big paws to fill as the Van Der Wall-Boomer duo had some amazing busts getting drugs off the streets of Northern Nevada.

Today, the team held a surprise ceremony and gifted Sgt. Van Der Wall these plaques.

Huge Thanks to Lithia Reno Subura!

Photo by Gaby Tafolla for WCSO

Lithia Reno Subaru presented this fantastic donation of $35,079 during the Barks and Badges event on Saturday, June 26th! This is a wonderful donation through their Subaru Share the Love Event . K9 Partners is thrilled and grateful to be a recipient of this money. Without the support of our community and the businesses in the Reno-Sparks area, we would not be able to provide everything needed for our Washoe County K9s to allow them to do the great job they do for the entire county.

Thank you to Chip Ciciovan and his great team at Lithia Reno Subaru and the national Share the Love program from Subaru for supporting our efforts for our K9s. You help to make so much possible for us!
